چکیده

Pulse oximetry has become a standard of care in anesthetic, pediatric and neonatal practice (l,2). It measures the per cent saturation of hemoglobin based upon the Beer Lambart's spectrophotometric principle of differential absorption of red and infrared light waves (660 nm and 940 nm, respectively) by the oxyhemoglobin and reduced hemoglobin(3). Pulse oximetry has been recently adopted for continuous intrapartum surveillance and fetal pulse oximetry has been projected as an accurate predictor of fetuses at risk for asphyxia with the significant additional advantage of being a non-invasive technique (4). This communication is intended to highlight the need, advantages and limitations of fetal, pulse oximetry.

Clinical Practice Guideline on Care in Normal Childbirth

This chapter examines which method is most appropriate for controlling fetal well-being in childbirth in healthy women, when and how to use fetal monitoring and how to interpret it. The following methods of fetal control will be assessed: intermittent auscultation (IA), intermittent electronic fetal monitoring (CEFM), analysis of the ST segment of the fetal ECG (STAN), fetal pulse oximetry, fet...

Trans-abdominal monitoring of fetal arterial blood oxygenation using pulse oximetry.

Pulse oximetry (oxygen saturation monitoring) has markedly improved medical care in many fields, including anesthesiology, intensive care, and newborn intensive care. In obstetrics, fetal heart rate monitoring remains the standard for intrapartum assessment of fetal well being. Fetal oxygen saturation monitoring is a new technique currently under development. It is potentially superior to elect...

Predictive value of pulse oximetry for the development of fetal acidosis.

AIMS To determine the predictive value of fetal pulse oximetry (FPO) for the development of fetal acidosis in cases of non-reassuring fetal heart rate (FHR). METHODS In a prospective observational study, pulse oximetry monitoring was examined in cases of non-reassuring FHR during singleton cephalic delivery at 36-42 weeks' gestation. The study examined whether fetal arterial oxygen saturation...

Accuracy of fetal pulse oximetry and pitfalls in measurements.

Pulse oximetry is a technique for estimating arterial oxygen saturation continuously and non-invasively. Reflectance pulse oximetry might become useful for monitoring the fetus during labour but it is much more susceptible to all kinds of physiological variations than the well-established transmission pulse oximetry for neonatal or adult monitoring. This review focuses on the accuracy of reflec...

Notes on the apparent discordance of pulse oximetry and multi-wavelength haemoglobin photometry.

Multi-wavelength photometers, blood gas analysers and pulse oximeters are widely used to measure various oxygen-related quantities. The definitions of these quantities are not always correct. This paper gives insight in the various definitions for oxygen quantities. Furthermore, the possible influences of dyshaemoglobins and fetal haemoglobin on the accuracy of pulse oximetry are discussed. As ...
